Two of Nalini Malani’s feminist works, “Remembering Mad Meg” and “Mother India: Transactions in the Construction of Pain,” offer powerful critiques of patriarchal systems and give voice to the experiences of marginalized women.
“Remembering Mad Meg” is a multi-media installation that features a larger-than-life female protagonist who fights against a male-dominated world. The work is inspired by the 16th century painting “Dulle Griet” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, which depicts a woman leading an army of women in a battle against Hell. In Malani’s version, the female protagonist is shown navigating a dystopian landscape, surrounded by images of violence and oppression. Through this work, Malani challenges traditional gender roles and patriarchal power structures, while also highlighting the strength and resilience of women in the face of adversity.
A video installation called “Mother India: Transactions in the Construction of Pain” discusses themes related to violence against women in India.
